HEALTH AND FITNESS FOR EVERYBODY

Health

The most widely accepted definition of good health is that of the World Health Organization Constitution. It states that "health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity" (World Health Organization, 1946). In more recent years, this statement has been amplified to include the ability to lead a "socially and economically productive life". The WHO definition is not without criticism, mainly that it is too broad. Some argue that health cannot be defined as a state at all, but must be seen as a process of continuous adjustment to the changing demands of living and of the changing meanings we give to life. It is a dynamic concept. the WHO definition is therefore considered by many as an idealistic goal rather than a realistic proposition. Using the WHO definition, 70-95% of people are classified as unhealthy. In spite of the above limitations, the concept of health as defined by WHO is broad and positive in its implications. It sets out a high standard for positive health. It represents the overall goal that nations should strive to reach.

The most solid aspects of wellness that fit firmly in the realm of medicine are the environmental health, nutrition, disease prevention, and public health matters that can be investigated and assist in measuring well-being.

Fitness

In its most general meaning, physical fitness is a general state of good physical health. A physically handicappedperson's body may be physically fit (healthy), though its ability is likely to be less than optimum.

Physical fitness is usually a result of regular physical activity and proper nutrition.

Physical fitness is often divided into three types:

1.Flexibility

2.Cardiovascular endurance

3.Physical strength and endurance

The government Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans say to aim for at least 2 hours and 30 minutes of aerobic activity that requires moderate effort each week

Health and Fitness

Health and fitness are two inter-related terms that have lots in common. It is with good health that your body automatically becomes fit. Similarly, exercising makes you fit, which in turn keeps your body healthy.

There is no age limit to health and fitness. It is never too late to make modifications in life, and live a healthier life. Starting an exercise routine is the first step to living a healthy life. Even if you have not exercised all your life, there is nothing stopping you from starting exercise at the age of 35. In fact, you will find yourself enjoying life more once you start incorporating some exercise in your daily routine.

Though it is preferable to exercise at least thirty minutes every day, you can start out with twenty minutes of exercise thrice a week. Exercise need not only mean workouts in the gym; it could be walking, swimming, a game of tennis or any other physical exercise that works up a sweat in you.

Besides exercise, health and fitness is also dependant on your diet. There is no need of making any drastic changes to your diet; just eating more of fruits and vegetables makes a great impact on your health. Make it a point to reduce the amount of saturated fats in your body, while eliminating Trans fat from the diet to make your heart healthier.

All this is ideal for maintaining your health and fitness; however if you intend to lose a few pounds, you will have to cut down your calorie intake. However if you cut down too much in your calories, your body turns into panic mode or starvation mode where the body tends to store calories as fat. You have to reduce your calorie intake by no more than 500 calories to ensure that you lose weight.

If you have calories to burn, you can do it by turning up the heat a bit by speeding your walk, adding some resistance exercise to your exercise routine and extending the period of time of exercise. Maintaining this routine helps in improving your health and fitness and in maintaining your body.
